Note:

A positive outcome might suggest infection with either the HIV-1 or HIV-2 virus, but a diagnosis of AIDS should be confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control. If samples consistently test positive, additional specific supplemental tests are necessary. Sole reliance on immunochromatographic testing isn’t sufficient for diagnosing AIDS, even if HIV-1/HIV-2 antibodies are detected in a patient’s specimen. A negative result doesn’t rule out the possibility of HIV-1/HIV-2 infection at any point.
